The more I read and learn about all these resources, the more I want to know about them and use them and show them to my students. I think Glogster is such an attractive tool it could be use in many ways by students or teachers: make a presentation, make a final report, show information for a project, requirements for an assignment, or just share with others the outings of an activity or project. I usually do some of this using other programs or even just an email. I think Glogster will defnitely make it look so much better and enjoyable. I love the fact of being able to put information in different formats and make it interactive.
I have previous experience working in advertising and I totally agree with Jack Utkos about design. If you want someone to see you, to read you, you got to make things attractive. I think Glogster will become very handy for our young students, as they sometimes have something in mind that want to express but are not good at drawing or else. This application has many tools for them to be creative and present their ideas in a very personal way. And it's so easy to use! When I was working with it, I showed it to my 6-year old niece and she was so into it. She actually helped me by picking frames and colors. It just keeps amazing me how technology can make the teaching-learning process a whole new experience for teachers and students. =)
This is my glog, not yet finished. http://raquelcm.edu.glogster.com/una-oportunidad-para-compartir/

I am so glad you found glogster useful! I appreciate you sharing your perspective as someone with experience in advertising as well! Children enjoy the interactive format. It also saves on purchasing supplies and on children who forget their work. It provides a wonderful opportunity to blend content knowledge, creativity, and communicating results. It also provides an opportunity to move from teacher-centered learning to student-centered learning, a whole new experience, as technology touches the lives of students at younger and younger ages. Thank you for sharing your glog! You are off to a great start! Donna

I will apply this collaborative online learning platform in the next semester because we have already finished the biology course. I like to improve my courses and promote in the student the creativity.
I would like to use this collaborative online learning in order to express the most important information and videos for the course.
I started creating my own glogster but I need to improve it. I will practice in order to apply to my course and demand to my students to create one
This is the link for the glogster that I am creating. http://iolvera.edu.glogster.com/periodic-table/
Iliana, I think we will see that glog on an iPad somewhere soon! How wonderful to bring a sense of humor to Chemistry! The video embedded is great fun, as is the quote and the links are great. Amazing how much information is contained on one glog! You might also like this visual periodic table http://www.rsc.org/chemsoc/visualelements/PAGES/pertable_fla.htm or this comic periodic table which shows the elements as they appeared in comics: http://www.uky.edu/Projects/Chemcomics/index.html

I've had used Glogster with my students once, and they found it exciting! Instead of creating the typicall paper poster, this one allows collaborative work, the integration of technology and it's way more fun. They can use their creativity, and most of them look very professional. They also can share them online.

Martha Laura, What do you think keeps the students engaged with Glogster? Can you share the topics that you used Glogster for and what students did with them? Could you share a student glog URL if it is on public display in Gloglster? Donna

I think students would love using it. It was my first time and I had fun finding different backgrounds and inserting text. I used it as an explanation page which is how I think I would use it. Students can use it for formulas or definitions or for rules that they need to know. Once again as with the mixbook, i wasn't sure how to put formulas on the page. I am used to using Microsoft Equation Editor which makes typing equations very easy. Does anyone know if these program have that capability? I like that they can use them online and look at each others work. It would be easy if they were working in groups to have them work at home- no one has to bring home the poster which will probably be forgotten!

Elizabeth, I am not familiar with MS Equation Editor...from what I see on the MS site, it inserts equations as an object. In Mixbook I think it would be easiest to create a Word document and save the document as a jpeg. You could do the same thing for Glogster (create a document and save it as a jpeg and upload as a picture file and insert the picture). Donna

Donna-Thanks I will give that a try

Mr.Doom
This would be a great way for students to review for exams using acquired knowledge. This would also be a great way use as an alternative to the traditional book report. JUST NEED MORE TIME/.

Great idea to use as a review tool in and out of school, wherever students have computer access. We could always use more time Mr. Doom...that is for certain! Donna

Glogster is a fantastic tool as an end of the unit product. My fourth grade students made a unit presentation of the Natural Regions of Mexico as teams. Each team had a specific region to present. The students were filmed and evaluated on their performance and knowledge. We wanted to share the students efforts and found Glogster to be an excellent source of communication. This Glogster was designed by the teacher: Zooming Mexico In the near future, the students will be introduced to the designing of their own glogs.

Thank you so much for sharing your Glog with us! Your original videos, video format, and student presentations will motivate everyone to demonstrate their creativity and explore the potential of this resource! Great practice on collaboration, communication and knowledge building Yvonne! Donna

I think Glogster solved the general interest for collecting multimedia elements that can represent a topic. It can be used when you will introduce a lesson to your students or when students will demonstrate what they learned.
Some features that I like about glogster:

  • easy to learn
  • It contains a variety of attractive elements of design. Using traditional resources might take you hours finding graphics appropiated for the work
  • students can continue editing their work at home and it is available any time
  • the attractiveness of the final product makes that students´self-confidence increase
  • you can embed your glog in a blog, wiki, or web page
I have to familiarize better with the video compatibility, I struggled a little bit with some video formats

I appreciate your comments about ease of use and increasing students' self-confidence. These are important as we develop effective presentation and communication skills with our students with the focus on student-centered learning. Donna

I'm using glogster with my students and they love it. Glogster give them freedom to present information in any format such as text, images, pictures, tables, videos and sounds. Also, glogster allow you to record video and sound or take a picture using an easy interface. I created Glogster groups and assigned a project by using the Glosgter Premium trail version, it is very easy to manage class and access students' glogs. At this point my 7th graders are just starting the project, meanwhile 8th graders are collecting information to present in a glogster.
I use to said "The information doesn't have a form but it must have an objective", I think Glosgter is the perfect expression tool.

Perla, could you explain what features you like in the premium version for anyone that might be interested? I agree that Glogster provides the form and format for meeting teacher assigned or student designed objectives. Thank you for sharing your group pages so that we could all see what the groups look like and how the privacy feature works. There are so many powerful examples posted by students of all ages on the site. It is an inspiration. Donna

Glogster Premium allows you...
  • To create student's accounts, it offers a very easy interface to enroll students by filling in a pre-designed Excel template, then you can assign them to one specific class.
  • As a teacher, we should use Glogster to present the assignment or activity requirements, once you finish you "Assignment Glogster" you can assign it to your class, so your assignment will be avaliable under "Activities" at student dashboard.
  • Students' accounts are password protected.
  • Students can visit and comments for classmates' glogster.
  • Class privacy is controlled by the teacher.
  • Teacher can monitor students' acitivity and interaction.
  • Teacher will recieve notifications at glogster mailbox .
  • A searching box is available, so you can use students' name, nickname, username (like I did), or any other.
I'm really enjoying Glogster, unfotunally my Trial version experied, but..... I can use the most of this features for free :)
Thank you so much for sharing your expertise Perla! Donna

  • Glogster into teaching and learning
I think I will integrate glogster as a project for my students so that they get to see math with a different angle. I haven't come up with the idea of how to integrate it yet, but I'm sure that my students will enjoy finding their way through glogster and this will become a strong aid for them in math.
  • student-centered learning?
Glogster will help my students work as a team, they will have the instructions posted and will have the liberty to create their own posterboard as far as their creativity allows them. The input of different ideas from their team members will allow students to learn more from each other.

I would think that math could integrate visuals and links to interactives found on using Wolfram Alpha search engine (remember module 1?). The visuals would provide an opportunity to ground theory in a concrete design. I hope you will share what your students create! Donna

I was new with glogster and I really liked the idea of this multimedia interactive posters. For Service Learning projects I would like to be presented this way next semester. For this semester students used Movie Maker to make a presentation/video. In my case I did an exercise to practice how to do a Glogster and I integrated some of their projects into a Glog, including pictures and Video. I wanted to include their research paper or some PPT documents but this is not available for the free version. This is the link: http://pgerez.edu.glogster.com/servicelearning/

By sharing their blogs and being able to comment on other blogs we would be fostering student-centered learning. I visited Perla’s group but couldn’t access because it’s private, maybe I’ll go look at it in her computer.

About Jack Utkos video, I really like some of what he says to wrap up… when he starts talking about how boring a job could be and how awesome it can be seen. I liked it specially when he says that Design can change our work flow, it can change everything. But my favorite part was when he said that we must try to put our work in our highest possible level, we just need inspiration, vision and determination…cause to be good is not enough.

This is something that is very true, sometimes we give just normal effort or ask for very basic stuff when there are so many tools available to go from good to GREAT!

An insightful comment, I think Phily. There are so many opportunities to see the things we have done or taught in a different light, and imagine the possibilities! For our students, I think this comes more naturally, which is why student centered learning using technology can be so exciting. Students are seldom reluctant to use technology, they just dive right in, and the products they create are amazing. We, as teachers, can act as guides to refine projects, help establish goals, and teach them to self assess the things they create. Your project is well represented in your glog. The videos are so different in tone, just due to the choice of music, they both inspire thoughtful consideration. Well done! Donna

Glosgster has me exicited! I discovered just over a month ago I have been keen to do my techonology integrated unit ever since. There are many ways to incorporate Glogster into classes. I plan to do a research based project to raise awareneness and funds for Haiti month after the quake. It is going to be a collaborative project with IT and hopefully a partnership with Union School in Haiti. Gloster is really special becuase it allows sthe students to create any type of media and share it through a single page which is visually engaging.

I can also see the advantages of having department pages for example on the the English Department Glog they could have how to notes for all text types which is like a bulit in tutor at home. Even in other department it could be awesome. For instance geography list concepts in each unit then click on it and have animated explained video. I am picturing plate tectonics videos and homemade volcano models eurupting on video which you can share with the class without the smell. In, summary Glogster is awesome!

LOVE IT!

Cath

Glogster is great! In January, I will be doing an author project w/ my 4th graders. Each students is assigned an author. He or she must research basic information about the author's life and read one book. Glogster would be a FUN way to present their research. It might even motivate some of my students who don't like to do these kinds of projects. It certainly beats writing a report. The only problem is that our school district has blocked Glogster (don't ask me why.) I've contacted the Tech dept, but to no avail. How frustrating. I will bug them again -- wish me luck.

Maruca
I think I can use Gloster in any topic of my history class. For example I can display images that represent the causes of the Texas War. Students can click in several of them and learn why each is a cause of the war. Other images could be shown just as clues.
Creating a Gloster while someone is substituting your class would be great for students too.
Last month in geography class students made “handmade” posters with the different climates of the world. It would be great is they could use Gloster to include real images of the different types of plants and animals found in regions according to the climate.
It is similar to Prezi just with sound.
The Glogster can promote student-centered learning in two ways; first one student can come with their own ideas and the second one by sharing does ideas a come with the best one.

Yes, I think so too. It is a cross between posters and prezi, Maruca. The interactive ability and the non-linear format make it more like a prezi. (You can embed video into a prezi too!) Geography would be wonderful on a glog, think of the graphics and photos, including maps, that could bring geography to life. Donna

I really liked this tool and I'm sure I will be able to use it often in my teaching. So far I created my first poster to introduce the topic of waves when we return in January (you can view it here http://www.timrylands.com/blog/2010/01/31/wordles-of-character/). I found it very nice that even though you shouldn't put a lot of information in it, there are many different ways to link what we want to present, so it will make students really focus on the main idea.

I'm already thinking about a project that they can present this way. Later on, they will work in teams to describe the characteristics and uses of each of the families of chemical elements. I can have them show the most important information there, with links to a video they shall prepare, as well as additional websites and interactive activities they will be asked to find so that all of them practice the required concepts.

Agreed. Like PowerPoint presentations that are effective, the glog is best when small chunks of information are shared. Wonderful idea to have students create their own video to share. As they script the video they will build knowledge, apply and synthesize concepts, and communicate what they have learned. Donna

I enjoyed working with this tool, I really like it. I will be using it to introduce important concepts along the semester. I created one of them as I will introduce exponential and logarithmic functions. http://lourdes23.glogster.com/exponential-and-logarithmic-functions/
I will also have students use it. I will have them use them to make reference sheets, and special posters they used to do them on paper. They used to be very creative on paper, I think they will like this since they can include videos, pictures and music.

Sounds terrific! I hope you will share the student glogs if you are able to do so! Donna

I love the capabilities of glogster and that it allows for such creativity. I teach elementary students who sometimes have ideas that are bigger than they can actually create freehand. The ability to include text, images, music, and video to a project opens up a whole new world for these younger students. I feel a bit overwhelmed at the thought of having to teach into all these areas to help students create a glogster. It might take several months of visiting the computer lab once a week to get them to understand all that this tool has to offer. I think I might be able to start introducing my students to glogster but posting my morning messages on my smartboard as glogster posters. I could add features and introduce them to my students, showing them how to use them in creating glogsters. Then when we get to the computer lab to actually begin to make their own, they will have some background on where to begin. The management ofhaving 25 students working on this on their own feels a bit overwhelming, but not impossible. My students do a multicultural unit and present their research on posters. For sure this year, we will be creating glogsters.
Terrific! I think that the interactive ability of the glog will work beautifully on the SmartBoard (interactive white board). Perhaps to start students could work in pairs to support each other and make managing the lab situation easier.Donna
